Bowman's Beach

Bowman's Beach

West — stunning sunsets

Widely considered the #1 shelling beach on Sanibel. A long, natural stretch of sand backed by sea grapes and native vegetation. Walk north for fewer crowds and the best finds. Feels wild and untouched — exactly what Sanibel is all about.

Parking

$5/hr via ParkMobile app. A quarter-mile walk over a footbridge crossing Clam Bayou (look for fish, birds, manatees, and even alligators) leads to the beach. Fills early on weekends — arrive before 8 AM.

Tips

Walk right (north) for the best shelling — fewer people venture that far. Arrive 1-2 hours before low tide for prime shell hunting.

Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach

East — one of the best sunrise spots on Sanibel

At the eastern tip of Sanibel with views of the historic 1884 Sanibel Lighthouse and San Carlos Bay. Calm, shallow waters make it a favorite for families. The fishing pier is currently closed for repairs, but the nature trail near the lighthouse is still worth exploring.

Parking

$5/hr via ParkMobile app. Approximately 100 spaces. Fills by 10 AM on weekends.

Tips

Walk the bay side for calmer waters and better shelling at low tide. This is one of the few east-facing beaches on Sanibel — perfect for sunrise.

Blind Pass Beach

Blind Pass Beach

West-southwest

Where Sanibel meets Captiva at Blind Pass. Strong currents between the islands wash shells ashore constantly — one of the most productive shelling spots on Sanibel, especially after storms. Do NOT swim near the pass.

Parking

$5/hr via ParkMobile app. Small lot at Blind Pass bridge — very limited. Arrive early.

Tips

Never swim near the pass — currents are dangerously strong. Stick to shelling and wading in shallow areas. Also a popular spot for shore fishing — snook and redfish. At its absolute best after a storm.

Tarpon Bay Beach

Tarpon Bay Beach

West — best when wind blows from the east

A well-equipped Gulf beach with restrooms, showers, and accessible parking. The wrack line at low tide often hides excellent shells. A locals' favorite that doesn't get the crowds of Bowman's.

Gulfside City Park

Gulfside City Park

South-southwest

A quieter Gulf-front beach in the heart of Sanibel with picnic pavilions and restrooms. The beach stretches wide at low tide — peaceful atmosphere with solid shelling and fewer crowds.

Turner Beach

West — the sunset beach

Technically on Captiva but accessible from Sanibel. Famous for spectacular Gulf sunsets — one of the best sunset spots in all of Southwest Florida. Also a productive shelling beach in the early morning.

Parking

$5/hr. Small paid lot that fills up very early, especially at sunset. Get there 45 minutes before sunset for a spot.

Tips

Come for sunset — bring a camera, a drink, and someone you like. Morning visits are great for shelling before the sunset crowd arrives.

Causeway Beaches

Causeway Beaches

Bay views — surrounded by San Carlos Bay

Three beach areas along the Sanibel Causeway. Islands A & B are spoil islands mid-causeway — popular for fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Causeway Beach Park sits on the Sanibel side near the boat ramp with full amenities. Pet-friendly (leashed dogs welcome) and open 24 hours.
